Mets' Santana addresses report by TMZ

|
NEW YORK -- Johan Santana responded Wednesday to a TMZ report that he was accused of sexual battery in October.

"I'm aware of the situation," Santana read from a prepared statement before the Mets-Tigers game at Citi Field. "What I can tell you is that police have investigated these claims last year, and I was never charged with anything, and the case is closed. Unfortunately at this time, that's all I can say. And I have no further comments."

The Mets released a brief statement to the same effect: "We're aware of the situation," the statement read. "It's a personal matter."

According to the entertainment website TMZ, an unnamed woman reported to the Lee County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office that Santana sexually assaulted her on a Fort Myers golf course on Oct. 27, 2009.

On Friday, the Associated Press reported that Santana had told Florida Police that the act was consensual. According to the report, Santana was never charged with a crime. The case was closed on Dec. 8, 2009.
