Three-run first lifts Mets over Tigers

Mets at the plate: Lastings Milledge hit a leadoff single and scored on Ruben Gotay's double to open the scoring in a three-run first inning. Fernando Martinez had three hits, including a ground-rule double, and Sandy Alomar Jr. added an RBI groundout.

Tigers at the plate: Former Mets player Timo Perez singled and scored in the fourth inning before hitting a solo home run in the sixth. Kody Kirkland added an RBI double.

Mets on the mound: Aaron Sele had a scoreless performance going before giving up three consecutive hits in the fourth, knocking him out of the game. Jorge Sosa pitched four innings of relief with one run allowed and four strikeouts.

Tigers on the mound: Mike Maroth gave up four hits in a three-run opening inning before settling down with three scoreless innings after that. Zach Miner and Jordan Tata pitched perfect innings of relief before Joel Zumaya struck out two batters, one of them on a breaking ball.

Grapefruit League records: Mets, 4-8, Tigers, 6-5-1.

Up next: The Tigers travel to St. Petersburg on Monday for a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Devil Rays at Al Lang Field. Jeremy Bonderman is scheduled to make his third start of the spring, followed by Jason Grilli, Preston Larrison, Bobby Seay, Dennis Tankersley, and Tim Byrdak. Ivan Rodriguez, Sean Casey and Carlos Guillen are among the position players slated to make the trip. Casey Fossum is scheduled to start for Tampa Bay.

The Mets visit Viera on Monday to face the Nationals in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest. Chan Ho Park, Billy Wagner, Aaron Heilman and Jon Adkins are scheduled to pitch for New York.
