ORIOLES (ss) 9, METS 0
at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Saturday, March 17
Mets at the plate:
Lastings Milledge led off the game with a single, but he was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double. Four innings later, Milledge cracked a two-bagger of his own. Anderson Hernandez was the only other player to hit safely off Orioles starter Erik Bedard, and he advanced to third base before the inning ended.
Orioles at the plate:
Four players -- Nick Markakis, Miguel Tejada, Aubrey Huff and Jay Gibbons -- singled in runs in the first inning on Saturday. Three of those four players eventually came around to score. Markakis added a run-scoring single later in the game, and Gibbons homered to pad the margin.
Mets on the mound:
Aaron Sele allowed hits to the first seven batters he faced on Saturday and surrendered six runs in the first inning alone. The right-hander rebounded to pitch through the fifth and finished his outing with seven hits -- all singles -- and six runs on his stat line. Joe Smith allowed two runs in his first inning of work.
Orioles on the mound:
Bedard spun five shutout innings and only allowed three runners to reach scoring position. The Mets loaded the bases with two walks in the fourth inning, but Bedard got a ground ball to escape the rally.
