Glavine hits stride in win over Dodgers

METS 6, DODGERS 5
at Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Monday, March 26

Dodgers at the plate: Andre Ethier went 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Wilson Valdez and Olmedo Saenz had one hit, one run and an RBI each. Matt Kemp chipped in with a two-run homer.

Mets at the plate: Jose Valentin had three hits, one a double, and two RBIs in four at-bats. Julio Franco also drove in a pair, and Paul Lo Duca added an RBI.

Dodgers on the mound: Brad Penny, often ineffective against the Mets, was that again, allowing five walks -- one a 10-pitch walk to Tom Glavine -- four hits and three runs in four innings.

Mets on the mound: Glavine allowed three doubles and three runs in the fifth inning, the only inning in which he struggled. He pitched six, allowing five hits and no walks and striking out seven. Offspeed pitchers usually are more effective in Spring Training than their hard-throwing counterparts, and Glavine was particularly effective with his changeup.

Grapefruit League records: Dodgers 16-12; Mets 10-18-1.

Up next: Oliver Perez makes his sixth start of the exhibition season on Tuesday night against the Nationals in Viera, Fla., at 7:05 ET. Jerome Williams is to pitch for the Nationals. The Dodgers play the Cardinals in Jupiter at 1:05 p.m. with Brett Tomko pitching opposite Chris Carpenter.
