Glavine gets call in opener vs. Cubs

One of the contributing factors in the Braves' decision not to pursue Tom Glavine so vigorously during free agency following the 2002 season was the presence of Jason Marquis on their roster and in their plans. The Braves believed Marquis had the potential to give them what Glavine had provided.

They were proven right, to a degree, though not in a way that benefited them. Marquis spent most of the 2003 season in the Braves' bullpen or the Minor Leagues and then was traded to the Cardinals. But since that trade, he has produced a 40-38 record that reflects his 5-1 start with the Cubs this season.

Beginning in 2004 and including his 4-1 record this season, Glavine has won 43 games and lost 35 with the Mets.

The two oppose each other for the second time on Monday night at Shea Stadium. The previous instance was May 13, 2005. Cliff Floyd hit two home runs off Marquis, as Glavine and two relievers combined to shut out the Cardinals.

Pitching matchup
NYM: LHP Tom Glavine (4-1, 2.98 ERA)

CHI: RHP Jason Marquis (5-1, 1.70 ERA)
Marquis has allowed one run in his last two starts, which cover 17 innings.

Players to watch
