Mets Sign Free Agent RHP Neil Ramirez & Place Asdrúbal Cabrera on 10-day DL
The New York Mets today announced that they signed free agent RHP Neil Ramirez to a major league contract and placed infielder Asdrúbal Cabrera on the 10-Day Disabled List, retroactive to May 14, with a sprained left thumb. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Mets transferred RHP Jeurys Familia to the 60-Day DL. Ramirez will wear #55 and will be available for tonight's game at Arizona.
Ramirez, who turns 28 on May 25, appeared in nine games this year for San Francisco and struck out 18 batters in 10.1 innings while posting an 8.71 ERA (10 earned runs/10.1 innings). Ramirez was designated by the Giants and claimed by the Blue Jays on May 5. He was designated by Toronto on May 9 without appearing in a game.
The 6-4, 215-pounder appeared in 18 games in the majors with three clubs in 2016, including eight with the Cubs. He notched 24 strikeouts in 24.0 total innings.
Ramirez posted a 1.44 ERA (seven earned runs/43.2 innings) with three saves in 50 games with the Cubs in 2014.
He has held righthanded batters to a career .218 (45-206) batting average.
