Alou finding timing in rehab outings

CHICAGO -- Moises Alou went 2-for-7 in a rehab start Tuesday, as the Mets shuttled their injured outfielder between the Florida State League and extended Spring Training games.

After picking up three hits in a FSL game with St. Lucie on Sunday, Alou and Ramon Castro (2-for-4) played in an extended spring game at home, as the Class A club was on the road in Palm Beach.

Alou played six innings in left and got multiple at-bats to help him recover some timing, before he returns to the Mets, perhaps as early as the end of the week.

"Both felt good, and they'll continue playing in extended for the near future," Mets assistant GM John Ricco said.

Ricco also said doctors told Pedro Martinez that his left hamstring strain is healing ahead of schedule, and he should be ready to throw off a mound in 10 days to two weeks.

Orlando Hernandez (right foot surgery) also had an appointment in New York, and it was determined he will continue to wear a walking boot for two more weeks.
