FLUSHING, N.Y., July 2, 2012 – Major League Baseball today announced that R.A. Dickey won the National League Pitcher of the Month award for June. It is Dickey’s first career Pitcher of the Month honor.
Dickey, 37, went 5-0 in six June starts, leading the majors for the month in ERA (0.93), innings pitched (48.1) and strikeouts (55). His five wins also tied for the major league high. The righthander tossed consecutive one-hitters on June 13 at Tampa Bay and June 18 vs. Baltimore, becoming the first major leaguer to do so since Dave Steib in 1988. He also became the fourth Mets pitcher to finish a calendar month 5-0 (or better) with an ERA below 1.00 (David Cone, May, 1988; Jesse Orosco, August, 1983; Tom Seaver, September, 1969).
Dickey, who was named to his first All-Star team yesterday, is the first Mets pitcher to win the award since Johan Santana in April of 2009. Earlier this season, the righthander won the Pitcher of the Week award for the period, May 21-May 27.
