Reed among Mets to file for arbitration

NEW YORK -- Six Mets players, including Jeremy Reed, the outfielder the club obtained in the J.J. Putz trade last month, have filed for salary arbitration.

The club faces possible hearings with Ryan Church, Pedro Feliciano, John Maine, Angel Pagan and Duaner Sanchez, as well. But chances are most of the six will settle and avoid hearings, as is the case with most clubs.

The Mets, in particular, are wont to avoid hearings. When Oliver Perez prevailed in his case against them last year, his was the first Mets case to go to hearing since 1992. Moreover, none of the six had particularly compelling seasons in 2008, so unless the club submits low-ball salary proposals Tuesday, the deadline for proposals, grounds for settlement are likely to develop.

Church, Maine and Pagan missed significant portions of the 2008 season because of injury, and neither reliever -- Feliciano or Sanchez -- had a strong season. Reed was a part time player with the Mariners, starting 72 games.

Pagan became eligible for arbitration even though his Major League service is less than the required three years. A special provision in the collective bargaining agreement -- it was part of the settlement of the 1990 lockout -- affords arbitration rights to unsigned players whose service is among the upper 17 percent of all players with two to three years service. Pagan's service through the end of last season was two years, 144 days. A season of service is 172 days.
