Mets acquire outfielder Collin Cowgill from Oakland

The New York Mets today announced the club has acquired outfielder Collin Cowgill from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for infielder Jefry Marte, who played for Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League last season.

Cowgill, 26, split time between Oakland and Sacramento (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League last season.  He hit .269 (28-104) with two doubles, a home run and nine RBI in 38 games with Oakland. With Sacramento, Cowgill batted .254 (66-260) with 33 runs, 17 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 37 RBI in 61 games.

Cowgill, who throws lefthanded and hits righthanded, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Kentucky.  Cowgill was traded to the A’s in December of 2011 as part of a five-player deal.

The Lexington, Ky. native made his major league debut with Arizona in 2011.  He hit .239 (22-92) with three doubles, one home run, nine RBI and four stolen bases with the Diamondbacks that season. He had two RBI in the NLDS vs. Milwaukee.

In 74 major league games, Cowgill has hit .255 (50-196) with five doubles, two home runs and 18 RBI.

Marte, 21, hit .251 (116-462) with 61 runs scored, 20 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 58 RBI in 129 games for Binghamton in 2012.
