FLUSHING, N.Y., May 21, 2013 - The New York Mets and New York Cares today announced the launch of the Mets Volunteer Challenge, providing Mets fans with a way to participate in meaningful community activities around New York City. Fans can sign up for the program at Mets.com/Volunteer

The Mets Volunteer Challenge will reward fans with Mets tickets and experiences based on the number of volunteer projects completed. New York Cares will coordinate the projects, which must be completed between today and September 1, 2013. The breakdown of prizes is as follows:

  • Home Run - complete between three and five projects and receive four tickets to a Mets game in September
  • Grand Slam - complete between six and eight projects and receive four tickets to a game in September and scoreboard recognition
  • Perfect Game - complete at least nine projects and receive four tickets to a game in September, scoreboard recognition and participate in a pre-game ceremony on the field

The Mets and New York Cares kicked off the Mets Volunteer Challenge earlier today at The Action Center in Far Rockaway. Mets players Greg Burke, Jeremy Hefner and Scott Rice alongside Gary Bagley, New York Cares Executive Director, served hot meals, distributed supplies and helped lift the spirits of residents and volunteers.

"Teaming up with New York Cares, the city's largest volunteer organization, ensures that our fans will have a wide selection of projects to choose from that will help communities throughout our hometown," said Jeff Wilpon, Mets Chief Operating Officer.

"The New York Cares mission is to meet pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service, and it is with deep appreciation that I count the New York Mets and their fans as partners and participants in that mission," said Gary Bagley, Executive Director of New York Cares. "This partnership will enhance our capacity to provide volunteer assistance to communities and agencies that need our support, both here in the Rockaways and throughout the five boroughs."

New York Cares is New York City's largest volunteer organization. New York Cares runs vital programs for 1,300 nonprofits, public schools, and city agencies to help people in need throughout the five boroughs, and does so at no cost to the recipient organizations. Since 1987, New York Cares has made it easy for all New Yorkers to work together to strengthen the city; last year, we provided critical services to 400,000 at-risk New Yorkers.
