Shortstop McNeil selected in 12th round

The Mets drafted Jeff McNeil, a shortstop from Cal State Long Beach, in the 12th round on Day 3 of the First-Year Player Draft.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound McNeil hit .348 with 16 doubles and 23 RBIs this past season. He showed some impressive plate discipline, striking out only 11 times in 221 at-bats.

He hit in the leadoff spot toward the latter part of the season, and finished the year with a .398 OBP. McNeil also stole 13 bases in 19 attempts.

McNeil is versatile in the field, and saw time at four different positions this season.

McNeil is a native of Nipoma, Calif.
