NEW YORK -- Home-plate umpire Gary Cederstrom ejected Mets manager Terry Collins in the bottom of the fifth inning of New York's 3-1 loss to the Brewers on Wednesday when the skipper continued to argue after losing a challenge.

Catcher Taylor Teagarden was ruled out after hitting a hard grounder that Brewers first baseman Mark Reynolds bobbled, collected and threw over to covering pitcher Wily Peralta.

It appeared as though Teagarden's foot might have beat the throw, but after a replay, it was ruled that the call on the field stands, prompting Collins to argue.

"Gary handled it just like he's supposed to," said Collins. "Sometimes, you've got to have an answer. You were sitting there watching the play and you can see what happens and you're saying, 'Look, I've got to get an answer.' They don't give us one, they just say the play stands. But it would be nice to know what they were looking at."

"My first reaction was that my foot hit the bag before the glove," said Teagarden. "That's the first thought that creeps into your head. I haven't had a lot of those go my way in my career, and you can kind of tell when you feel like you won one. But it was close, a close replay. I guess it was a little bit too hard for them to overturn."

The Mets were trailing 3-1 at the time and went on to lose by the same score.

"I have seen closer plays than this one tonight overruled," said Collins. "I think the system works. I like it. Tonight, for whatever reason, whatever they saw that I didn't see in here, it didn't get changed."
