Braves at the plate: Brian McCann's infield single -- a ground ball off the knee of Elmer Dessens, the Mets' second pitcher -- produced a run in the third inning. Top prospect Jason Heyward had a hit, two walks and a stolen base.
Mets at the plate: Jesus Feliciano, who batted leadoff, had two singles, the Mets' only hits in the first three innings. He drove in the Mets' second run in the fifth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Ike Davis produced their first extra-base hit, a leadoff double in the fifth against Jesse Chavez. He scored from second base two batters later on a single by left-handed-hitting outfielder Jason Pridie. Ruben Tejada singled in the final run in the three-run fifth. Davis had an opposite-field single against left-hander Mike Dunn in his third at-bat. Russ Adams hit a long home run in the eighth inning.
Braves on the mound: Tommy Hanson started and struck out three batters in two innings. Chavez allowed three runs, two earned, in one inning.
Mets on the mound: Starter Nelson Figueroa struck out Omar Infante, DH Mitch Jones and Nate McLouth with runners on second and third in the second inning. Bobby Livingston, summoned in relief of Dessens, allowed two walks and struck out four in 2 1/3 innings.
Grapefruit League records: Mets 1-0; Braves 0-1.
Worth noting: Late-morning rain and resulting wet fields prompted Mets manager Jerry Manuel to remove Luis Castillo, Jose Reyes, David Wright, Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur from the original lineup. ... Dessens was removed during the third inning after being struck on the right knee by a McCann liner.
Up next: The Mets and Braves, who are to play four games against each other this spring, play the second one Wednesday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., beginning at 1:10 p.m. ET, a game which will be shown on MLB.TV. Pat Misch (Mets) and Tim Hudson (Braves) are to start.
Misch, who is out of options, is a long shot for the Mets' rotation. With Chipper Jones and Troy Glaus set to make their exhibition season debuts, the Braves will have most of their regulars in the lineup. After Hudson works the first two innings, top middle relievers Peter Moylan and Eric O'Flaherty will take the mound. Fans will also have a chance to see Johnny Venters display the sinker that has caught manager Bobby Cox's attention.
