FLUSHING, N.Y. - Major League Baseball named Mets righthanded pitcher Jacob deGrom the National League Rookie of the Month for July.
DeGrom, 26, went 4-1 with a 1.39 ERA (five earned runs/32.1 innings) in five starts, striking out 38 and walking seven. The native of Deland, FL became the second Mets player to earn Rookie of the Month honors. Justin Turner won the award in May of 2011.
DeGrom lost his first start of the month before winning his final four turns. He struck out a career high-tying 11 over 7.0 shutout innings on July 8 vs. Atlanta before beating Miami, 9-1 on July 13. He tossed another 7.0 innings of one-run ball on July 22 in Seattle to win, 3-1, before closing out his month with 6.1 innings in a 2-0 win at Milwaukee.
DeGrom tied for the monthly league lead with four wins.
