Mets consider switching rotation order

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Mets have changed the sequence of their exhibition game rotation, perhaps with an eye toward changing what had been expected. John Maine, who was scheduled to start Wednesday, now will start Thursday instead. Nelson Figueroa, still with a chance to be the long man, is to start against the Marlins Wednesday instead.

A person with knowledge of the club's pitching plans said Tuesday that Jon Niese may be put in the third spot in the rotation, before Maine, and Oliver Perez, ineffective in his start against the Cardinals on Tuesday, would be the No. 5 starter.

Johan Santana will remain in Port St. Lucie when the team travels to the west coast of Florida Thursday. He is to throw a bullpen session Saturday.
